About Our History
In September, 1962 the newly formed Morningside Methodist Episcopal Church met at the home of Mrs. Salome Hardeman under the leadership of Superintendent Rev. Bruton and Rev. Marshall Hodge, founding pastor and Civil Rights leader. Therefore, the Morningside Methodist Episcopal Church was organized and boasted 12 dedicated and committed members. From its inception, the church made rapid progress organizing and developing the required ministries and commissions to meet the necessary standards for establishing a Methodist Episcopal Church. Under the leadership of Rev. Hodge, the congregation grew exponentially requiring members to seek more spacious quarters. On May 12,1964, the Morningside Church held its first worship service in its current facility at 2860 Evans Avenue, Fort Worth, TX 76104. At the 1968 General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church the Evangelical United Brethren Church united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. As a result, the United Methodist Church was born. The new merger had over 10 million members. More than 25% of the new church was black or African Americans. Thus Morningside Methodist Episcopal Church became Morningside United Methodist Church and part of the Central Texas Annual Conference.
